First thing to note: following does not actually imply anything, specifically if you two aren't "friends." It just indicates that your posts marked PUBLIC will certainly turn up in their timeline. No big deal (you noted it PUBLIC, right?).
Second, if you would like to know that is REALLY following you:
1. Go to your pals listing
2. Strike the "MORE" switch on the right
3. then strike "Following".
If you do not like what you see because listing, you can click the "Manage" pencil icon and after that the "Edit Privacy" button in the upper right (see screen shot above).
